Buried Treasure Podcast No. 7 - JOHNNY THUNDERS TRIBUTE

BTP EPISODE 7 – APRIL, 2008
DOWNLOAD BTP EPISODE 7 HERE IN MP3

Of the hundreds of Thunders bootlegs out there, this is probably my favorite, and it was recorded in the last year of his life. It’s an all-acoustic show, just Thunders and his guitar, with sax accompaniment, yet it captures his charm, humor, wit and showman ship in its most pure form. It shows the musical direction he was headed in his life. He is really together here, playing a number of new songs such as ‘There’s No Such Things As A Bad Kid’ and’ Some Hearts’, which show he was starting to write with a social conscious as well. It’s a great show, and it will fit onto a CD. As April is the month that we pay tribute to the memory of Thunders, you can download this great Thunders show. Please however, do the right thing and go out and buy the originals to support his legacy.

Apocalypse Club, Toronto, 7/7/90
Dissapointed in You, Joey, As Tears Go By, Sad Vacation, Eve Of Destruction, It’s Not Enough, Familiarity Breeds Contempt, Bring It On Home, Memory, There’s No Such Thing As a Bad Kid, Olivia, I Only Wrote This Song For You, I Tell The Truth Even When I’m Lying, Some Hearts, It’s Not What You Say, Diary Of A Lover, Look In My Eyes, Round and Round, Gloria.

It's hard to believe that Johnny Thunders has been gone for 17 years now and although anticipated, his death still came as a shock, particularly the violent manner with which he died. 17 years is a long time. Time enough for his legacy to have grown and for his guitar playing to have influenced a whole new generation of kids. In many respects, rock 'n' roll died with him, for he is yet to be surpassed, and in my world, he never will be. There will never be another like him. This special edition podcast, on the anniversary of his death, is my tribute to his memory and his music. If this is your first taste of Thunders, welcome aboard. This podcast is in 2 parts for you to download. If you enjoy this podcast, go out and but his albums and the books released by Nina Antonia. Jungle Records is a good place to start.

This podcast features a range of interviews, demos and live material, 99% of which has not been commercially released. Part one of the Thunders tribute podcast includes: The New York Dolls from Long Island in 74, an early demo of Born To Lose, Love Comes In Spurts demo with Richard Hell on vocals, The Heartbreakers live from CBGB's in January '76 and also a tune from Manchester on the infamous Anarchy Tour of '76. You will also hear a tune from The Living Dead and a demo from Gang War. Also included are a couple of BBC radio interviews with Thunders from 1984. Part 2 of the podcast focuses on the last years of Thunders life, with some great live material from Detroit in 89 and a killer tribute song by Michael Thimren (Thunders' Swedish guitar player 82-83), which was originally released on my old label, Vicious Kitten Records. There's a demo of 'Help the Homeless', as well a tune from the very last Heartbreakers performance in 1990. We also include a song by The Heartbreakers from the Johnny Thunders Memorial Show from NYC in June, 1991 (the last time Jerry Nolan performed on stage). Also included is a rare 'audio documentary' on Thunders' life, which runs for 30 minutes and was originally aired on BBC Radio 1 in 1992. RIP…..

Buried Treasure Podcast No. 5 - RANDY RHOADS TRIBUTE

BTP EPISODE 5 – MARCH, 2008
DOWNLOAD BTP EPISODE 5 HERE IN MP3

The first of two monthly specials, paying tribute to my two favourite guitar players. In April, I will pay tribute to Johnny Thunders, however my tribute to Randy Rhoads is long overdue. As the calender rolls over to another year, it's hard to believe on the the 19th of March it will be 26 years since Randy passed away in 1982, at only 25 years of age. In this special edition podcast, I pay tribute to the memory of Rhoads and endeavour to define the characteristics that made his playing so unique, and his legacy enduring. Over two hours, I examine Rhoad's life, from the Quiet Riot days through his period with Blizzard Of Oz. The special includes interviews with Quiet Riot, Frankie Banali, Ozzy Osbourne and Randy himself, as well as many rare live cuts from both Quiet Riot and Ozzy. Randy Rhoads....the guitar hero of my youth......may his memory live on.

Related sites worth checking

As many of you know in a former life my brother and I printed and distributed Vicious Kitten Fanzine. The online version of the mag was known as the Vicious Kitten Funhouse. If you dig Buried Treasure Podcast, you will definitely find something of interest with the old zine. After many requests my brother has reupped the site and it can be found at http://www.viciouskittenfanzine.tk/ What people may not know is that we printed up 10000 copies of that sucker during its four year life, and managed to distribute the thing to all capitol cities in Australia, as well as Newcastle and Wollongong.....and it was available for free. Copies of the mag are also held at the National Library of Australia for reference purposes ! There is also a Wikipedia entry for the zine which you can read here.
